Popular actress and University of Kentucky alumna Ashley Judd has accused the school of silencing sexual assaults against sorority members, claiming the university “suppressed, hushed, denied” the assaults.

Judd posted a four-minute video on Sunday saying she was aware that some members of Kappa Kappa Gamma, the Beta Chi chapter at UK, were raped while enrolled at the university. She accused members of fraternities who “frequently socialized” with Kappa Kappa Gamma members of committing the assaults while keeping specific details private to keep the victims anonymous.
[–>
“You mattered then, and you matter now,” Judd said in the video. “The institution may have forgotten you. We have always remembered you.”
[–>
Judd, “a three-time rape survivor” herself, said she does not know if the victims survived the assaults, if they received medical and psychological support or if they stayed enrolled at the university after the assaults. But Judd, who was a Kappa Kappa Gamma member while a student at Kentucky, claimed UK knew about the assaults and “shielded the boys who raped you from accountability and denied you justice.”

“So today we share our bewilderment, our own sense of loss, our anger, and how collectively our needs for safety and protection went unmet, and both you and we were deprived of the opportunity of provisioning care and love and attunement, support and solidarity to you,” Judd said in the video. “We all could have learned so much more, and we all could have done so much better.”

Judd attended UK from 1986 until 1990 before graduating in 2007.

Alleged sexual assaults at Cornell, LSU
[–>
Judd’s post came amid other sexual assault accusations at other universities, such the Cornell Seven and the Kendall Francis investigation.
[–>
A woman — identified as Jane Doe, recently filed a civil lawsuit claiming seven Cornell University students and Chi Phi fraternity members raped her for several hours inside a fraternity house in October 2024. The university investigated the claims and expelled or suspended several of the men, but no criminal charges were filed, according to CBS News.

The Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office reopened the case in late September after receiving criticism from the community, CBS News reported.
[–>
In the other case, Francis called out Louisiana State University after a Title IX investigation into her accusations of rape resulted in a modified punishment for the suspect, an LSU football player, according to NBC News. ESPN reported that the player, defensive end Damien Shanklin, originally received a one-year suspension in July, but an administrative law judge changed his punishment to four semesters of probation, allowing him to remain on campus and on the football team.

Francis said “LSU does really protect their athletes, especially their football players” in a video posted on TikTok, according to NBC News. East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore launched an investigation into the allegations in September.

University of Kentucky responds to Ashley Judd’s video
[–>
Kirsten Turner, UK’s vice president for student success, responded to Judd’s video in a statement to the Herald-Leader.
[–>
“We are deeply grateful to Ashley Judd and her Kappa Kappa Gamma sisters for speaking up on behalf of survivors of sexual violence. All survivors deserve to be believed and treated with compassion, no matter how much time has passed,” Turner said.
[–>
“Let there be no ambiguity: sexual violence is unacceptable, and we condemn all forms of interpersonal violence in the strongest possible terms. It is a serious violation of trust, safety and human dignity, and it has no place at the University of Kentucky.”
[–>
The university has invested in resources involving survivor support, violence prevention, advocacy, and trauma-informed services, education and counseling, according to Turner.
[–>
“Our commitment extends beyond responding to incidents of violence,” she said. “We will continue working to build a culture where prevention, support, accountability and respect are shared responsibilities across our entire community.”
